The target audience for this workshop is for clinicians who work with women of color. The workshop will share a model to address Women’s Wellness in an empowerment group from the South Asian community. The workshop is designed to have an open forum to discuss the components of the group replicable with other communities of color and to address how to make the group more culturally proficient to other communities of color.

Participants of this workshop will: 1) increase knowledge about working with women from the South Asian community; 2) increase skills in facilitating an empowerment group; 3) identify how the wellness group differs from a psychotherapy group and the challenges and opportunities therein; and 4) identify ways to replicate the model with other communities of color.

This workshop is recommended for clinicians with five or more years of
experience. Razia F. Kosi, LCSW-C, is the founder of the nonprofit organization, Counselors Helping (South) Asians/ Indians, Inc. (CHAI) which addresses mental health and wellness issues in the South Asian community. Ms. Kosi created a model for Women’s Wellness groups that focuses on empowerment and wellness. In addition, she conducts cultural proficiency workshops with mental health professionals in the community and educators in the Howard County Public Schools.

Shoba Nayar, LCSW-C, is the co-facilitator for the Women’s Wellness Groups and is an experienced therapist who has worked with both individuals and groups. She has worked with women from various ethnic backgrounds and is experienced in cultural competency work with women of color. She has presented on working with South Asians.
