Licensed Clinical Social Worker-Clinical (LCSW-C) has a masters or doctorate degree in Social Work and is licensed by the state to provide services to individuals, families and groups. The Clinical Social Worker works with individuals using a macro-systems approach. The macro- approach takes into account the people and systems (culture, society, family, and other influences) that affect the individual. Therapists who are clinical social workers receive further training in various therapeutic approaches to work with the clients in a counseling setting. LCSW-C’s are trained to identify and treat mental health diagnosis and can work with individuals, families, couples, and groups.
Licensed Professional Counselor are practitioners who have completed either a master’s or doctorate degree in counseling. Counseling is a change making process, including settings such as personal, vocational, educational, and relational. It is traditionally short term (less than 6 months) and focuses on situational and developmental changes. In addition, counselors are also trained to do assessments, diagnostic evaluations and psychotherapy drawing from theoretical models. LPCs have subspecialties: addiction counseling, career counseling, gerontological counseling, marriage and family counseling, mental health counseling, school counseling, rehabilitation counseling. Each requires specialty training and certification that is licensed by the state in which the counselor works.

The psychiatrist can prescribe medications they are licensed by the state as medical doctors. Psychiatrists are trained to use multiple therapeutic techniques including psychoanalytic, behavioral and cognitive therapies. Psychiatrists may work with other mental health therapists to provide psychiatric medication and collaboration on the therapy.
Psychologist has a doctorate degree in the study of brain functioning, mental disorders, and developmental concerns. Many psychologists also provide support navigating the normal crises in an individual’s life as well as communication and relationship issues. They are able to diagnosis and treat mental disorders, and, like a psychiatrist, use an individualistic perspective. In most states, psychologists are unable to prescribe medication, and use other therapy techniques, such as talk-therapy and behavioral therapy, to treat patients. They can be trained in psychoanalytic, cognitive, Gestalt and other therapeutic approaches to help facilitate change in the client. Psychologists are trained in providing comprehensive assessments and evaluations. Psychologists are licensed by the state in which they work.
*Studies show that a combination of medicine and therapy yield the best results for many patients. However, not every individual in therapy needs to be on medication.
** Many insurance companies will cover mental health services. Check with your insurance company to see what they will cover. If your insurance company does not cover services, many mental health providers will work out a per session payment plan with the individual.
